Program Description

The River Otters program introduces first-time kayakers to the sport through a standard river-running progression. The focus is on the basic, technical aspects of kayaking while incorporating FUN and SAFETY. Sessions in flat water, moving water and river-running will evolve throughout the program as athlete skills and comfort levels progress. Individualized and focused attention will build athlete confidence in their ability to comfortably navigate Class II & III whitewater. All an athlete needs is competent swimming skills and the desire to learn and be on the water.

Specific Skills Focus

River safety & awareness; wet exiting an overturned kayak; maintaining a strong, balanced body position; learning edge control and boat stability; proper paddle strokes; techniques for paddling straight and turning; learning and identifying river features and hazards; swimming in whitewater; mechanics of rolling in moving water (hip snaps, T-rescues, body & paddle position); whitewater navigation; and introductory surfing techniques.
